Over twenty-two million dollars has found its way back into the pockets of Boston residents this 2022 tax season thanks to the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program) and its Boston arm, the Boston Tax Help Coalition, under the Mayor’s Office of Financial Empowerment.

With close to 11,000 Boston residents served, an estimated 2.7 million dollars was kept in their pockets by keeping them away from commercial and fee-based preparers. And many received the Earned Income Tax Credit, putting over 6 million dollars back into constituents’ purses from that credit alone!

This work wouldn’t have happened without the dedication of our volunteers. Over 140 diligent folks became IRS-certified to prepare and file our residents’ taxes for free. Ensuring financial education, these volunteers were joined by 10 Financial Guides, and 30 Site Coordinators, all there to ensure an open and accessible experience for our clients.

If you are interested in joining our team of volunteers, please sign up here. And as always, to help our numbers grow, find out if you qualify to have your taxes done for free!
